The primary purpose of the AIP Mather policy internship program (supported by the John and Jane Mather Foundation for Science and the Arts) is to promote awareness of, and interaction with, the policy process in Washington, D.C. for undergraduate physics students.
Elias and fellow SPS intern Drew are working in Congressional offices on Capitol Hill, directly engaging in science policy issues and efforts in the nation's capital. As part of their service, Elias and Drew are introducing the other SPS interns to the public policy process by arranging field trips to appropriate science policy events or locales–Congressional hearings, governmental agencies and/or facilities, for example.
My name is Elias Kim and I am a rising senior at Vassar College. For much of my life, I was set on pursuing a career in science and engineering. I entered my freshman year of college planning on majoring in physics; three years later, I've fallen in love with political science and the way it has forced me to reconsider my understanding of the world. I'm now pursuing a career in energy, defense, or technology policy and am thrilled this summer to be working with the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Originally from Merrimack, New Hampshire, I slowly fell in love with the outdoors and now am an avid hiker and climber. I've also played soccer for much of my life, and am looking forward to my fourth and final year playing for Vassar's varsity team. When I am not on the soccer field, working in my physics lab, or studying for class, you can find me trying too hard at intramural sports or pretending like I belong in the weight room. I've also been known to play the piano when I can and obsess over fantasy and science fiction books. I am excited and ready for whatever Capitol Hill has to offer!
