Society of Physic Students Zone 3 regional Meeting
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) chapter at Hudson County Community College (HCCC) hosted an engaging and insightful two-day Zone 3 regional meeting on April 12th and 13th, 2024. Attendees, representing various institutions including Saint Joseph's University, Camden County College, Rowan University, New Jersey Institution of Technology, Rutgers University, Adelphi University, Hunter College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Union City Board of Education, and HCCC, gathered to participate in this enriching event.
The event started with a warm welcome from Dr. Jones, Vice President of Academic Affairs at HCCC, setting the tone for a series of enriching sessions.
Professor Matthew Wright, Chair of the Physics Department at Adelphi University, delivered a captivating workshop titled "Be a Shark," combining career insights with interactive networking exercises. Dressed in a playful shark costume adorned with stickers, Professor Wright's session was both entertaining and enlightening, leaving attendees with valuable lessons on navigating professional opportunities.
A panel discussion followed, featuring admission officers Mia Badillo and Carly Hickey from NJIT, along with Marcus Bourbon from Rutgers University. Their insights into the selection process for undergraduate transferring students and graduate admissions provided invaluable guidance to attendees seeking to further their academic pursuits.
The event also featured a poster session showcasing student research projects, fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration among participants. Following the session, winners were announced, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field.
Dr. Steve Greenbaum from Hunter College delivered an inspiring plenary keynote on battery technology, drawing from his experience in designing batteries for the Mars Rover. Attendees were enthralled by his expertise and real-world applications of physics research.
The field trip to visit the Liberty Science Center was a highlight of the event, offering attendees a fascinating glimpse into the wonders of science and technology. Arriving in style, a coach bus transported our enthusiastic group of guests to the center, setting the stage for an unforgettable day of exploration. Upon arrival, attendees embarked on a journey through the interactive exhibits and captivating displays, immersing themselves in a world of discovery. From marveling at the robot solving the Rubik's Cube to delving into the mysteries of the cosmos in the planetarium, every moment was filled with awe and inspiration.
An enjoyable and captivating aspect of the meeting was centered around the students' shared experiences capturing the solar eclipse that occurred four days prior to the event, on April 8th. Participants showcased their photographic talents, documenting the phenomenon of the moon blocking the sun. The session began with students sharing their images of the eclipse. Subsequently, attendees had the opportunity to cast their votes for the most compelling photographs, making the activity both engaging and interactive.
The voting process added an element of excitement as participants eagerly supported their favorite submissions. Ultimately, the top three winners were announced, receiving recognition for their exceptional photographic skills and artistic vision.
The meeting was sponsored by HCCC and the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and prepared and executed by the dedicated members of the SPS at HCCC, under the leadership of the chapter president Camila Pazmino and their advisor Dr. Clive Li. The organizing team, consisting of Amareese Rivera, Justin Mosquera, Christopher Yera, and Dillon Singh, worked tirelessly to ensure every detail was thoughtfully planned and executed to perfection. Overall, the event was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and equipped with valuable insights to propel their academic and professional journeys forward.
